The ‘Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006’  received the assent of the President of India on 23rd August 2006. The ‘Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011 and other regulations were published by the Government of India in May 2011. The latest of the amendments to the rules and regulations were published on 4th August 2015. All these efforts were aimed at consolidating the various regulations related to food and to establish the ‘Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’.  Various earlier acts like Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954, Meat Food Products Order 1973 and Milk and Milk Products Order 1992 etc ceased to exist after the enactment of the new Act.

This new Act has set ‘standards for articles of food and regulates their  manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption’. Moving away from the multi- level, multi- departmental control of matters related to food safety and standards, this Act envisaged a single reference point.
