Bird Flu4

A state-wide culling of ducks and chicken has been started in Agartala (Tripura, India). Culling and killing of birds are on the way within a radius of 3 kms from the government owned poultry farm where the bird-flu was reported. Transportation of poultry and poultry products are banned in the state and the poultry markets are ordered to be shut down. In the neighboring Bangladesh (Rajshahi) around 8600 chickens were reported to be dead following an outbreak of disease.

Since February 3rd, around 2000 birds were reported to be dead out of the disease and the blood samples are found to be positive for H5N1 virus at the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Bird Flu 1
Centre, Kolkata. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has been alerted on the outbreak.

Outbreaks of the disease was reported in Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia and China during the period from December 2003 to February 2004 which killed 91 people and infected 169 human beings. Around 150 million birds were culled at that time. Around 40000 chickens died in Maharashtra in 2006 out of the disease and another outbreak was reported in 2008 in Kamalpur, a district close to Bangladesh border.
